Simple New Year gifts that your children can make at home

Clay jewelry

Homemade jewelry is one of the most popular gifts children can make with their own hands. While there are many recipes for making the perfect jewelry, the following instructions will help your child make the simplest jewelry at will! Plus, the following recipe makes at least 2 dozen ornaments, so you can make one for every family member, family and friend!

• 1 cup baking soda
• ½ cup cornstarch
• ¾ cup warm water
• Cookie cutters with New Year's designs
• Cutting board
• Rolling pin
• String, yarn or twine
• Straw for drinking
• Plastic ornaments (costume jewelry), small colorful buttons, sequins, spangles or any other ornaments your child would like to use!
• Paints and brushes (optional)

1. Combine baking soda and cornstarch in a small saucepan and stir. Add warm water and mix well.
Bring the mixture almost to a boil over medium heat, stirring so that small bubbles form on the surface, until the liquid thickens. The mixture will begin to pull away from the sides of the pot. Continue stirring until the mixture reaches the consistency of frosting.
Remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool. The mixture should be slightly sticky to the touch.
Remove the dough from the pan and place it on a cutting board on a work surface. Knead the dough into a ball.
Add glitter to the dough if needed. You can also add glitter later.
Help your child roll out the dough so that it is at least half an inch thick. At this stage, use cookie cutters to form the shapes of your ornaments and use a straw to poke a hole in the top of each ornament. You will later attach a string to this hole to hang them on the Christmas tree.
Now your child can decorate the toys however they like! Press sequins, buttons or other decorations into the dough! You can also paint them!
Place the ornaments on a baking sheet to dry. Find a sunny, dry place indoors or dry them in the oven on the lowest setting until they harden.
Thread and tie a ribbon through the hole and the ornaments are ready!
